Alchemy of The DJ

DJ education, lectures and workshops

NYU Alchemy of the DJ Fall 2026 Students

The Alchemy of the DJ is built on a simple belief: DJing is an art, a ritual, and a business, and a DJ who understands all three plays differently. Created by Rimarkable, the curriculum weaves together technique, music history, spirituality, and cultural analysis, so students learn not only how to mix but why they choose what they choose.

What Students Learn

The work begins with intention. Before the blends and transitions, students are asked who they are behind the decks and what they want a room to feel. From there the curriculum moves through the science and logic of performance, from reading a crowd to building trust and holding a dance floor from the first record to the last. It places the music inside its lineage, tracing Black dance music from its origins to where it is heading, because a DJ who knows where a sound comes from selects with more purpose. The business side is treated as part of the craft, since an artist who cannot sustain themselves cannot sustain their art. Every student leaves with a clearer personal voice and a stronger sense of what they are here to say.

Where it is taught

Rimarkable teaches Alchemy of the DJ as faculty at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music and at the Underground Music Academy in Detroit. The curriculum has also reached Yale, the Queens Museum, Berlin, and Nairobi.
