Biography
Redefining the word "Remix"
Detroit is where she was constructed. Chicago is where she was refined. New York is where she was cut into her final form, and recognized herself as the blade. Rimarkable is an Afro-Puerto Rican DJ, producer, vocalist, songwriter, educator, and cultural architect from Detroit, who has spent more than two decades proving that dance music, at its highest expression, is not entertainment. It is ceremony.
Her story begins in the sanctified heat of a Pentecostal church, where her mother, a classically trained pianist and music minister, filled her earliest years with gospel harmony and spiritual discipline. Childhood summers in Chicago planted the pulse of house music deep in her bones. As a product of Detroit’s sonic ecosystem during the formative years of house, techno, and hip hop, she absorbed the full spectrum of Black musical innovation in real time. Influenced by the visionary ethos of Electrifying Mojo’s Midnight Funk Association and the sonic range of early MTV, she came to understand music not simply as sound, but as language, transmission, and responsibility.
She stepped behind the decks in 1997 as a mobile DJ, working weddings, community gatherings, and private events throughout Detroit and its surrounding metro areas. Those rooms were her proving ground. There, she developed the business acumen, stamina, and razor-sharp crowd intuition that would become hallmarks of her work. She learned how to read a room, hold attention, and move people with intention, skills that continue to define her sets on the world stage.
In parallel, she cultivated her voice as a live performer. A seasoned vocalist and commanding front woman, she led several funk and soul bands throughout Detroit in the early 2000s, most notably Soul Power Experience Unlimited Band and a widely celebrated James Brown tribute project. These years grounded her in live musicianship and stage presence, shaping a performance sensibility that seamlessly translates into her work behind the decks and in the studio.
In 2005, she left Detroit carrying everything that city had built in her and cast a wider net. San Francisco Bay Area received her and gave back in kind, where she carved out a genuinepresence on the West Coast dance music scene and expanded her understanding of community, curation, and sound across a new landscape. By 2008, New York called, and something clicked into place that had no name until it arrived. By 2006, unwilling to wait for an industry that was not yet ready to receive her fully, she became her own producer, transforming resistance into autonomy and claiming authorship of her sound. What followed is a career that belongs to no single lane. She has shared stages with George Clinton, Madonna, Erykah Badu, Louie Vega, Danny Tenaglia, Honey Dijon, Roger Sanchez, Pete Tong, and Francois K, holding every room with the quiet authority of someone who understands both the assignment and the calling.
Her long-running events across Detroit, New York, and the Bay Area have become more than parties. They are gathering points for community, spaces rooted in authenticity, musical depth, and the kind of joy that borders on liberation. In 2021, she joined the Defected Records family, taking her place within one of house music’s most influential global institutions. As a host of the weekly Defected Radio Show, she now reaches audiences across more than 170 FM stations worldwide, extending her voice, perspective, and curatorial vision to a rapidly expanding international listenership. Her discography includes releases on Detroit legend Waajeed’s Dirt Tech Reck, Classic
Music Company, Big Love, Club Bad, Nervous, Vega Records and more, reflecting a catalog that is both rooted and forward-facing. As a vocalist and collaborator, she continues to bring a distinct, soul-driven presence into contemporary dance music, bridging classic musicality with modern production.
Beyond performance, Rimarkable is a respected educator and thought leader. She serves as an Adjunct Professor at New York University’s Clive Davis Institute and as an instructor at Waajeed’s Underground Music Academy in Detroit. Through her groundbreaking course, Alchemy of the DJ, she frames DJing as art, ritual, and business in equal measure, weaving together technique, history, spirituality, and cultural analysis. Her teaching has reached institutions and audiences including NYU, Yale, the Queens Museum, Berlin, and Nairobi, expanding the conversation around dance music as a vehicle for healing, collective power, and cultural continuity. She is also the founder of Betty Jean’s Dream, an independent record label named in celebration of her mother. Rooted in legacy, musicality, and artistic integrity, the imprint reflects a multigenerational commitment to excellence and a dedication to releasing music that prioritizes depth, craftsmanship, and emotional resonance.
To experience Rimarkable is to step into a revolution of rhythm. Every set is intentional. Every transition is felt. Every dance floor she touches becomes a space of connection, release, and transformation.
Detroit is her foundation. New York is her canvas. The world is her stage.
This is not just music.
This is Rimarkable.
